Newspapers Are Hurting, How To Help

The newspaper industry received a wake-up call this week when Knight Ridder, the nation’s second largest newspaper group, put itself up for sale.

Bloomberg News Service explained it this way: “Shares of newspaper companies such as Knight Ridder Inc. and New York Times Co. are among the worst performers in the U.S. stock market this year, and it’s no mystery why: Readers, and thus advertisers, are shifting to the Internet.”

The Knight Ridder news sent shock waves through the industry. “There will be other newspaper companies that now have to consider what their strategy is going forward,” said Jake Newman, analyst at Credit Sights.

Knight Ridder — publisher of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Miami Herald, San Jose Mercury and 28 other daily newspapers — put itself on the market after its three largest stockholders demanded that the company be sold because of poor stock performance. Knight Ridder stock hit a three-year low in October, but has rallied on news of a possible sale. Newspaper stocks were hurt by a 2.6 percent drop in print circulation over the last six months.

Knight Ridder has hired Goldman Sachs to explore strategic alternatives, including a possible sale of the group.

At least one expert predicts there will be buyers for Knight Ridder. “It’s a slow death overall for newspapers,” said Scott Black of Delphi Management Inc. “But the bottom line is they (newspapers) are money machines that generate a lot of cash.”

The American Press Institute now calls the nation’s newspapers an “industry at risk.” The API has started a project called “Newspaper Next: The Transformation Project,” with a stated goal of developing “viable new strategies for newspaper organizations, executable in the next five years that will reverse the decline in our industry’s share of audience and advertising.”

API has hired strategist Clayton Christensen of the Harvard Business School and his firm Innosight, to lead the project.

Adapting to a “broad-band” world is the major issue facing newspapers. When — some 10 or 11 years ago — we at TownNews.com started sounding the alarm to newspaper executives about the effects of the Internet, we ran into what we called “the 1 percent rule.”

This started when we asked the president of one mid-size newspaper group to meet with us to discuss Internet issues. He responded: “The Internet is only 1 percent of my business. I’m too busy to deal with that now.”

Over the years, most newspaper executives have — often grudgingly — come to realize the importance of the World Wide Web to the newspaper and advertising worlds.

Today, few are asleep. The headline over a Reuters story this week said it all: “Knight Ridder wakes up sleepy newspaper business.” Let’s hope the wake-up call didn’t come too late.

On top of that, visitors are encouraged to use a rating system for the businesses and the listing. Many newspapers have put forward lackluster options for its online readers. Why? Not sure. But, I think one of my clients is starting to get it. The County Courier has recently launched their local community portal for Franklin County, Vermont. The website is North West Vermont, and it features a host of possibilities for readers and community businesses. For instance, if you're looking to buy or sell a home in Franklin County Vermont, you should definitely check out the NorthWestVermont.com portal site of the County Courier. Moreover, the website portal of the newspaper features a local community events section for the surrounding towns with a featured online Community Guide.

Basically, I think the Courier is really started to develop into a hub for the northwest, Vermont towns. Eventually you'll see many community events posted online there, as well as realty and properties for rent or sale listings on the website.

This is something I am urging all of my clients to do, and hopefully more will seriously consider. If not just for the commitment to their readers, then for the opportunities to increase online revenue income.

Making The Most Of Your Web Presence

How important is online media? How important is print media? There may just be a growing battle between the two in the next decade or so. Revenues amongst the two grow closer as one increases and the other decreases. But, let's take a more important look at who's in need of either format of media.

For a small business with limited marketing dollars, what produces the best return on investment? I guess depends on what you sell. But, old markers used to be that if you weren't in the Yellow Pages, you needed to be. And that was irregardless of what market your company was in.

Consider this, the Yellow Pages of print are dying. Faster than you or me, or the person that sits next to you on a bus. Small business is evolving and so is it that small business marketing will change immensely. Positioning your company for the future, and it doesn't matter what your company deals with, will require solid Internet presence and marketing. Why? It's not only the new Yellow Pages, it's also the new television, new magazine, new local community newspapers, new local business and marketing portals/roledexes, and pretty much everything that exists in the corporeal world, does or will exist on the web.

Get there! And get on it FAST!

Getting Advertisers Online

Many publishers claim to have difficulty getting their advertisers to move to online advertising. As much as I refute this difficulty, since Google and Yahoo! and others seem to make billions from this issue, I have to try and work with my clients. Persuade them to use different approaches, after-all, the web is not print.

One of my orginal clients, The County Courier, has agreed to launch a portal website that will feature a community events calendar for Northwestern Vermont, a dedicated real estate listings section for homes and properties for sale, and a complete local online business directory. The Courier has also allowed my company to manage and negotiate selling of advertisements and listings on their websites and directories.

The latter has enabled several changes to take place. No longer with the Courier websites simply sell static or animated gif ads. Nor will it be limited to simple business listings. I AM Presentations will be offering many versatile packages available to County Courier customers and ad clients.

Many newspapers have websites. Many of those make little to no money for the publisher. Few people in rural Vermont find newspaper websites useful... Do I have data to back that fact up, only the cries of bewildered publishers claiming dismal visitor traffic reports for their websites. Why such low traffic? Well, my guess for starters is the content-content-content!

I'm not referring to your quality articles or lack there of, but rather your ability to regularly produce easily accessible content for a variety of technologies. A variety of technologies? Yes, from integration with Google (news portal and CPC ads)to RSS feeds and mobile devices, content is king. Build great and easily accessible content on a VERY regular basis and your web traffic will grow tremendously. Many atimes I've mentioned how the automobile industry is turning more and more of its attention to web advertising. They are not alone. For small weekly newspapers, the road ahead can be either depressing or inspiring. As newspapers lost classifieds, employment listings, and realtors and auto dealer ad monies, the web has gained them. I'd like to mention a few things that any small newspaper can do, and all should do.

The housing bubble is most likely starting to deflate. As that happens, realtors and even homes for sale by owners will need to spend advertising revenue carefully. The web is by far one of the most efficient advertising mediums. Accountability over the web is one of the most alluring features the technology presents. Many small newspapers don't even have websites, and boy are they in trouble. Some small newspapers have sites but don't manage them efficiently. I'm not going out on the limb in any regard by saying that every newspaper's website should be a moneymaker.

For the small newspapers currently without a website, give me a call immediately (802.264.1904) because you are missing revenue opportunities and seriously effecting your current and future market-share.

For example, realtors and auto dealerships now spend considerably more money on web advertising than print. These used to be print's closest and biggest friends. Both of these markets rely heavily on technology to accomplish their marketing needs. For auto dealers, they even can receive co-op money for websites and advertising. For realtors, many franchises pour millions into establishing and managing a successful web presence.

For both of these markets, Internet opportunities at the local level are a no-brainer. For example, how many cars have you purchased miles away from where you live without test driving it first? Dealers that secure and dominate their local market will increase sales dramatically. The same is essentially true for realtors... ever buy house without looking at it?

For newspapers with sites that aren't making money, you should give me a call too. There are several revenue generating options that are free to implement and cost you no time to maintain. Moreover, in most cases you dominate your local area for community news and events. Chances are high that your residents look to you for information on a regular basis. Give it to them! Make it easy to find and regular. There's no reason why a Weekly has to be a weekly on the web. Hello World of Magazine and Newspaper Publishers

It may come as no surprise, but I have started yet another Blog on Google's blogger service. And, yes, I still run and maintain several other blogs not with Google (i.e. BoSox Blotter: a web publication devoted to the Boston Red Sox, techNtalk: a web magazine covering technology news & reviews, SleazyQueen: an influential blog about the pornography—and the sex culture—that digital technology and distribution has made possible, and iamCars: the leading web publication for the car and automobile market. I'm sure I'll be launching more publications in the future, as I have many topics of which I like to write about, and friends interested in writing more as well.

In any event, I'd also like to share with you some of the newspaper and magazine clients that I AM Presentatins serves through its iPublishing solutions.
